So i was careless this morning and i got nailed. Badly. F'd in the A. Wasn't focused on what i was doing clicked on something i shouldn't have and now have spent the rest of the day trying to regain control of my own machine.

So my question is, Why?? Why do these little f*cktards feel the urge to write these things and send them out not knowing who gets infected? Ethical concerns aside I can understand guys who write a virus that has some sort point to it but these pointless little annoyances just irritate me more cause I know that no-one gains from it....unless you go for the whole "All viruses are written by the anti-virus companies" theory.

Oh and before anyone starts thinking i got nailed looking at a dodgy porn site, i was nailed trying to find a Serial Number....for a piece of software i already own!!!!!!!G*DDAMN Genius Webcam comes packaged with a false f*cking serial number!

There is big money is viruses & spyware. Simply put.


That's what help desks & call centers are for. If you legitimately own it... you should have called the company that makes it.

Most easily found serial number generators are complete hogwash.

After this hassle i am so going back to the place i bought it and demanding an upgrade for my trouble... well probably not but i will go and demand a replacement.

... why should they? If you didn't call into their support, then it's not their fault that you borked it.


If there are no new viruses, then there isn't a need for you to keep your virus database up to date. One directly feeds off the other. If everything just worked as it should, then you'd only ever need once piece of software & then they wouldn't be making money.

Just my 2 cents.

While i can fix the problem on my own, I get a bit pissed about the fact that I pay for a product and then I get it home and I have to mission to fix it. They should charge less then otherwise i would have gotten a competing product that worked like it is supposed to. I know it's not a big deal but its the principal of the thing.

Some of them are.

Plus there is the XP AntiVirus also known as AntiVirus 2008 or AntiVirus Vista that is simply some sort of spyware that installs itself & looks like a legitmate antivirus. It will "find" (fake results) of viruses & spyware & wants something like $80 to remove the items that it found. Just another example of money.

That was one of the things that kept popping up. Yeah I'm going to download something recommended by the thing I'm trying to uninstall. Right

I've had fewer viruses in the years since installing avast.

From the people in my degree I have found there are 2 types of people interested in code. Those who have written a virus and those who have used one. Now not all of the writers release them, but I find it amazing that those writing them are usually not the ones who release them on unsuspecting people.

The only thing worse than getting caught by websites is from a network. In my residence in first year uni, we had a guy who was port scanning and sending out viruses to every computer he was able to find. Now he knew nothing about computers, but he caused me to have to format my comp twice in a few months. The firewall on the university protects us from every little thing on the outside, but makes us wide open to those already inside it. Ironically he came to me looking for help when his computer "magically" got formatted one night.

Just like the whole not needing an anti-virus on linux, cuz theres no money in it

I used to know a lad who got employed by the goverment as a 'Cyber Security Analyst' ... gets paid a lot to hack, and a lot at that

Edit - oops forgot my point, i let my niece sign into thta habbo hotel thing on my old laptop (ok it was really me using it ...) and i got about 5 viruses on it, was not impressed. One of them locked my registry, two of them just caused general annoyance by deleting my settings over n over again, a good pair, between them they covered my whole machine. I dont think the other two actually did anything, heh.

All you need is a firewall and common sense. That reminds me, I better check ShieldsUP! on my laptop. Shields UP! is a website that Ubuntu told me to try out to check and see if someone can sniff my machine for open ports.
