Study bootloaders & their source code. Once you have good understanding of how the Computer begins the booting process, then you'll have a good idea as to what you are up against in building an OS.

If you really want to know the guts of the beast, Linux from Scratch seems like a good place to start.

Writing an operating system isn't the same thing as building a Linux distro.

There are a lot of tutorials on writing bootloaders and such things here.

If you want to make your own Linux distro, that basically involves putting together packages and you could do it with no real coding.

I can also recommend some good reading:
Design Of The Unix Operating System, by JS Bach
Modern Operating Systems, by Andrew Tanenbaum
