Text Based MMORPG Based on Recent Animes, Need Help With Some Information

Hello everyone,

I'm a Junior web developer who enjoys Anime's and other great things like that so i thought to myself why not make a good Text Based Browser Game for Anime lovers? All i want to know is what languages i need to read into if i want to get this project off the ground. Some help would be greatly appreciated

You'll want to read up on HTML/CSS initially.

Then you'll need some kind of web scripting langauge like PHP or Perl.

You'll probably want to store game state in some kind of database, so you may also want to read up on MySQL or PostgreSQL.

I don't mean to crush your hopes, but you probably won't make any money on this, and you may open yourself up to lawsuits by using copyrighted material.

On a side note, this should probably be moved to the Game Programming forum (hint hint). This seems like more of a "I need help" thread. smile.gif

Tom's got it all right, there - especially the point about lawsuits. The moment you start making money off of anything copyrighted/trademarked/etc., you can expect a few lawyers to be breathing down your neck.

Hmm.. Thanks for the information about the Languages.. but i got the whole copyright thing covered. If i do make this project get off the ground i'm gonna have to have it revised from a friend of mines who will double check that kind of stuff. Besides www.theninja-rpg.com is still here and strong and they avoided any type of lawsuit and the main creator of that site is paying his school loans from the game. But thanks and you don't need to move the thread because i'm not really looking for help as of right now.

I'd also be interested to know how the main creator of that site is making a profit. It doesn't look like he's charging to play. Ad revenue perhaps?

I do understand how the copyright law works. He avoided all this by not using any branded names ideas or concepts from the anime. Nothing from any of the animes are in his game with the same name.. he simply used another name or created something else similar to it to avoid it. The creator of the site does make money off the revenue's BUT he also sell these things called Rep points that help you get a bloodline (Hard to explain) Bassically if your weak... you buy rep points with real money and it helps you become stronger in a way. And he also has Fed Support in which you pay 7 dollars a month to have more extra's then other users on the online game. He has made over 10,000 dollars on the site... i've seen people on the game with 2600 rep points... (20 Rep points are 22 american dollars)

How long did it take him to start making money? How long has he been running the site?

I'm not trying to completely shoot down your idea, I just believe that sometimes constructive criticism is helpful. smile.gif

And I respect that. and That Profit hes made much more then that because his game has been up for about 3 years and i'm gonna put it in that he makes 504 dollars a month.. and that's the lowest he makes. and it took him 4 months before he started really making money seeing how in the beginning there isn't that much people playing his game. But i want to do something along that idea.. but i just won't use anything branded to avoid lawsuits and stuff... other text based MMORPG use that site as inspiration to make their money/site.. but they always fall short.

I plan to start off small and keep building up until i've seen that the site has become sturdy enough to allow people to start registering. But who knows maybe your right. But i deffinetly plan to look into this a little bit longer seeing how it's a good way to make money on the side
