Using some analytics information from Dream.In.Code, I wanted to share a more in depth look at 1,000,000 visitors. As you develop your own web sites, having information on browsers, resolution, flash version, etc. can help you decide how to layout your site and design for your visitors.
Now keep in mind, Dream.In.Code is a tech heavy site, so the numbers are going to be skewed a little toward the more "savvy" user. This often means more linux, firefox, higher resolutions, newer versions, etc.
Let's start with a look at browsers:
How about the adoption rate of FireFox 3?
Around 40%. Not too bad, but again, to be expected from a savvy group like this. FireFox has automatic update though... why all the outdated versions floating around?!
Alright, how about Operating Systems?
Wow, 4% Linux penetration, more than Mac! That's awesome. And look at the iPhone making an appearance. That's going to be a much bigger market in coming years. Start getting a game plan ready to optimize your sites for a better mobile experience.
How's the Vista adoption rate looking?
Hmmmm... 15% That's actually more than I figured. But still pretty bad. And seriously... Windows 95 still?! WTF?
Next let's look at the screen resolutions people are running these days. This is the important stuff. How big do you design for? I've seen a couple sites starting to design for 1280 but I honestly don't like it. Even at 1280, I still like to run my browser at 1024 wide.
1024x768 is still #1, but overall the larger resolution crowd has a bigger piece of the pie. I'd still design for 1024x768 though.
In terms of Flash versions... everyone is pretty much running some flavor of Flash Player 9... so let your ActionScript 3 go nuts.
If you have any other specific questions, I'd be happy to answer them based on the data I have.
For my work sites (non-tech savvy oriented) ff picks up like 25-30 %.
1024 still wins out ,but honestly i've been using 1600x1200 for years so i think everyone is behind. most sites are real skinny to me and most my designs are way wide for everyone else. son of a .
Are you looking ahead to 1000 000 (million) visitors or did you also make a mistake like that one guy did on his DIC tat in the photo comp? Given the timing of the post I would have thought you were looking at 100 000 visitors...
111 visits from people using ME? Damn I didn't think anyone still used that POS! Interesting that Linux has a larger penetration here than does MAC. Looks like DIC is increasing the number of *nix users lol
I like the wider skins but I normally program for the skinny ones, that is becuase of the nice people who refuse to buy a new monitor. I am running 1024x800 on my laptop (because that is the largest it can go ) and 1280x1024 on my desktop (again, the largest it will go) someday I will get a monitory that supports 1600+ but for the moment I have what I have.
I am amazed to see that DIC gets that many unique visitors in 3 weeks, I don't think I have got that many unique visitors on my site in the 2.5ish years it has been open Woot woot for DIC!
Sorry guys, it was me on the ME and win95. My bad!
Oh and just so you know chris, I am one of the visitors that came in on the iPod (honestly). Used an iPod touch with DIC to see how it would look. Your site came through exceptionally well and no major criticisms. Just thought I would let you know.
Most of those hits are coming from PsychoCoder refreshing the page with his IE loving ass
BTW Skyhawk those are really interesting stats. do you have a geographical breakdown as well? When I ran a city portal I liked to see where my visitors (ISP's) were coming from.
