If I disconnect the new ethernet connection it is back....... Is there a way to designate which lan connection should use the internet and the other just reg network stuff?

Well you're not giving enough relative information.

Is your internet connection through a wireless connection?

Is there mac filtering on the wireless adaptor or router ?

Is your new PCMCIA ethernet adapter picking up an IP address for your DHCP server ?

If your IP address are static then you will need to transfer the new information onto your new adapter - although you will need to remove it from the original adapter first.

Ok We have DSL in the office......I tried wired and wireless but couldnt get it to work right........ I did have internet when I disconnected the ethernet cable on new card, that quit later too.........I don't believe there is any mac filtering on the router.....will check tomorrow when I get back to work....the PCMIA card is picking up an address and is talking to other computers, just not the internet. The internet address is not static......when the internet was working on the laptop it had a 192.1268.1.102, but when I connect the new ethernet connection it changes to a 10.40.31.101 address, now my main server is 10.40.31.1

Ok. It sounds like you're having DHCP issues.

It could be as issue that more than one DHCP server exists on the network. Easy solution: Find the offender and unplug.

If on the other hand, you're getting your DHCP information from the server, it could be that it's not picking up the gateway address correctly.

Check the gateway address through your network connections - status.

Then, if it's a modem / router (which most places use) then you should be able to put that IP address into a web browser and it should ask your for a username and password (this confirms that the router is working and that you've got the correct gateway address)

Apart from that, if you can connect directly to the modem / router instead of just to the 'network' and confirm you can get internet access that would eliminate a few other variables as well.

Ok checked the router that the internet is coming from.......made changes in ethernet connection 1 to the assigned ip gateway and dsn......haven't reconnected the new connection yet......wonder if I could adjust its settings manually to one above or check router and see what ip address is available....assign it that number with the same dsn and see what happens from there......if that works then I can disconnect number 1 ethernet and see if number 3 (new card) gets one the net as well as the network.....what do you think?

Ok seems like the manual assignment of ip address and dsn worked for bothe connections now......the web is up and is still talking to the network...Thanks everybody for your help....
