So I've done a lot of web dev stuff in the paste but nothing really professional. I'm creating a site and just had some general questions that i couldn't find too much info on:

1.) Files Sizes:
What's a good average file size for a web page. Obviously you need to keep it as low as poosible for faster download speeds but I was wondering if there was a general guidline? ei: keep it under xxxkb

Also, banner sizes?

2.) Standards, do these really matter? As long as the page loads properly in all major browsers? (IE6/7, FF2/3, Opera, Safari, Netscape)

I've checked most of these browsers and no bugs.

Thanks

there isn't a set file size, just make sure it loads on a variety of speeds.

most the time if someone ever says anything about the speed, then you have cause for concern. as long as the user doesn't comment on it then they probably aren't thinking about it.

banner sizes , i guess you mean like banner headers?

i don't design sites for anything less than 1024x768. 800x600 is done with. still a large percentage use the 1024.

so i normally make a page about 960 pixels wide. thats just my number.

if your talking about banner banners. like ads
then i would go to google and check out their sizes they are the standard ones used on the web.

File sizes are something that you want to have as small as you can get while still keeping the look and feel like you want. I am not sure on the exact size that peole find exceptable, but I have seen that normally you can get everything you need into a file in a few KB. Images also need to be watched, again I am not sure on the largest you want to have them, but I suggest using gif and jpeg when they will do, with compressed png for things that need better graphics with transparency kept in tact.

As for standards, it really depends on what you are going for. If you want to have it look the same cross-browser the standards may actually hurt you in your progress, however if you only want to support browsers that support the standards it can make your life a lot easier. In general I don't worry about going with the standards as IE 6 tends to have its own standards to follow, after that I worry about getting it to work in the other browsers I want to support.

Hope that helps.

I don’t think so there is any standard of size for an image is there but while uploading you can restrict by size and approximately 5 mb will be enough for any sixes of image...At the time of uploading you can aware the user for it size.
