I’m trying to network four computers, and I’ve searched Google with no luck for a solution. Two are laptops and two are desktops. The laptops use a wireless connection for the internet and the other two are connected with a blue internet cable (Cat 5 I think; not sure.) I’ve tried setting up a wireless network and I’ve tried several different things with the set up a home or small office network. I used to have three of them networked, but one crashed and we reinstalled XP, but now I can’t get them to work again. They all have the same workgroup (MSHOME) but they will not show up on the other computers as shared or even in the workgroup computers section as connected computers. Is it possible to get them to all work together on one network? I’ll list the operating systems below. Thanks in advance!

A: XP Pro (Desktop with blue cable & router)
B: XP Media Center Edition (Desktop with blue cable & router)
C: XP Home Edition (Laptop with Wireless)
D: Vista Home Premium (Laptop with Wireless)

Are you using a wireless router? If so there should be ports in the back to hard wire your two computers.

Is file and printer sharing turned on? If it is did you try picking a folder and enabling sharing on it?

Quite honestly I'm not sure if they're wireless routers. I think they are because my laptop can connect to them. I'm not quite sure what you mean by hard wiring them. I'm quite new to this stuff.

When I ran the set up a home or small office network thing I checked the one that said to turn on file sharing, but so far none of my shared folders have shown up and I can't "find" the printers. Also on computer B it says something about a print spool service not running.

Also I just ran around and re-did the entire thing to see if that would fix it and I shared folders on A and C, but B won't let me share anything. It's greyed out for some reason. The files are still not showing up on the other computers.

on the back of your wireless router there should be ports to plug in your Ethernet cords. that's what i mean by hard wire, you are physically connecting a wire from your pc to the router

Quite honestly I'm not sure if they're wireless routers.

I would check to make sure all four computers can ping one another, & that they are in fact all on the same network. Otherwise, you won't be able to share anything.

Once you have assured they are all connected to the same network, sharing the same ip scheme, then if it still doesn't work, it's a file sharing / permission issue.

Thank you all for your help and suggestions. I finally figured it out. Sorry it took so long to reply. Things have been crazy around here. Anyway, I found out that my dad had them hooked up through two different routers so we switched it all over to one of them and it seems to be working now. I just have to figure out how to get my computer to allow me to add a printer. (I get some kind of spool error.)

Again, Thanks! smile.gif

Is the Windows Printing Spool Service turned on?

I'm not sure. How do you check to see if it is on? The error I get is "Operation couldn't be completed. The print spooler service is not running." In that case I guess the service wouldn't be on come to think of it. How do you turn it on?

Guessing that you are running XP (of some form)

In the control panel, find administrative tools, open services (where you start & stop Windows services), locate Print Spooler, right click & select start. If start is grayed out, then it's already running. Perhaps a reboot would be in order?

I did that, but when I clicked start it came back with an error message. "Could not start the Print Spooler service on Local Computer. Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start." And yes, I am running XP. I think it's Media Center Edition.
