I am currently using .NET 2005 Express edition (the whole package, VB, C#, J#, C++, and Web Design). I was thinking about upgrading to 2008 Express. I already installed the VB.NET express for 2008 just to test it out, and i didn't see anything utterly spectacular about it. I wanted to know if there is any feature of either of the editions that you really like.

It isn't all about features, for most it is about VS's incrementation in technology with .NET 3.0. Visual Studio has a lot of different hidden features that most wouldn't be bothered to document and only find it magically while you're writing code. smile.gif

if you going to use one use 2008 it is about the same but has WPF witch is awsome. except has some very simple features that are not added in like printing. problem with both is u gotta have framework 3 or 3.5. although 2005 has less errors when you try to configure the installation and the framework requirements.

As mentioned before, in the new version are present many improvements. Most likely you'll first mention that J# isn't anymore included in Visual Studio. Also, there are new features included, like WCF, WPF, WF and LINQ, so if you plan to use these, you've got to switch to VS2008.

I find 2008 a tiny bit faster on some operations a little more put together. I find them very similar but that 2008 has a bit more in the way of syntax upgrades that I actually think are a step in the wrong direction. I will be writing about these changes in an upcoming blog article soon.

Overall though I do like 2008 better than 2005. Here is the official MSDN "What is new in 2008" page.

What's New in Visual Studio 2008" - MSDN

That will give you an overview of some of the new things you can find. Most are syntax changes or new way of doing something. Of course it also has .NET 3.5, WPF support in a bigger way and of course LINQ as already mentioned.

Hope this helps! smile.gif

I prefer .NET 2005 because their the only things that work on my computer barely though. :\ I can't get .NET 2008 to install so I've never tried it plus my school uses .NET 2005 express in their classes.

I only use VS for XNA, and they were pretty slow with making 2008 work with it, since they put out a new xna framework too. Once I get to updating to 2008 and xna 2.0 then my vote will definitely go to it, since there are nice updates both in visual studio and xna

XNA 2.0 only works w/ 2005. XNA 3.0 will only work w/ 2008. So don't plan on XNA 2 and VS2008. smile.gif
