This is not the only research into biological computers. There are actually quite a few different approaches -- mostly because there are so many "binary" relationships in biology. For example Hemoglobin works as a switch as it either houses oxygen or not. In school I read an article about a Hemoglobin computer and a Hemoglobin storage medium.

DNA computing is also very interesting because it has something to say about the P = NP problem. There are problems that can be solved nearly instantaneously using DNA strains are rather difficult in your standard binary computer. However the DNA "computer" is not really all that different from a binary one...
