Router Help - Small 2 CPU network LinkSys router, it suddenly stopped working

I have had my router WRT54G V8 series for about 4-5 months now. Out of nowhere neither computer gets an internet connection through it.

The green light(s) for the internet incoming, the connections outgoing, and power lights all show. The light that is usually on for the little Cisco stamp isn't though. I don't really remember if it was white or yellow, or white and then yellow when there is a problem. Regardless, its not on all-together.

I went to the linksys site and updated my firmware, that didn't seem to solve the problem. I also double checked the settings and saw nothing that I could recognize out of the ordinary.

Although, about a month ago I cut the wireless setting to disable, that shouldn't have bothered anything though.

I am not sure what to do now. I have reset the router multiple times, unplugged it and everything. This problem has been going on for about 4 days now. I am just directly wired from the modem to this one computer until I get the problem fixed.

Also, when I have everything connected in the router, I am able to access the LAN folders, like the shared folders just fine. I am just not getting a net connection to either computer, plz help!

I have a WRT54G Router and I've never had any problems with it whatsoever (although I do admit, setting it up was a bit complicated, thanks to SES)

You have set up the wrong settings in the router.

Follow these steps:
Connect a computer directly to your internet connection socket or modem, apply all the settings locally to your computer and check if it works.

If it does, then it means that you have configured the router incorrectly or that the MAC address of your router is rejected by your ISP. Usually, ISPs lock your internet account to a single MAC address, thus preventing other people from using your account if they manage to find your password. Since the MAC address stored by the ISP rejects all others except that, you will need to change it from the Setup->MAC Address Clone menu. You could also call customer support and ask them to add the default Router MAC to your account's White List. (Personally, I prefer the first one so I don't have to deal with the mandatory scripted dialogues of the customer support)


If it does not work, then you've got the settings wrong altogether. Contact customer support and ask for the correct static IP, Subnet, Gateway and DNS IP addresses.

Let me know if it still doesn't work.

EDIT: I noticed that you're currently directly connected to your modem. In that case, cross-check your router settings again (I know you've done this a million times) and ask your ISP to add your Router MAC Address to the white list.

Anymore, a router is nothing more than a 266mhz computer with a small OS on it, dedicated to routing traffic. With that being said, computers will lock up from time to time. Or your routing tables can become corrupt. I did not see anywhere in your text that you power cycled the router. I have to do mine anywhere from 2 to 5 times a year. I know that is excessive, but it's just a suggestion in this case.

Yes, this is the first time I have heard of power cycling. I will do some research on it and possibly post how to do it. Unless of course its just pulling the plug and waiting then I did that.

this is a quote I have from some site I forgot to save

"many a broadband connectivity problem has been solved by nothing more than powering off computer, router, and modem and turning them back on in the reverse order, allowing modem and router to complete their power-up initializations before turning on the next piece of equipment"

Okay, so I did the power cycle and had no luck...

This question goes to born... do you have a light (yellow or white) that shows up on the cisco logo thing?

Yea, it's a yellow/orange light on the logo.
I pressed it accidentally once and it turned white. I couldn't use Wifi for a few minutes, but I waited for some time and it turned yellow again and everything was back to normal.

Pressing the logo activates the Secure Easy Setup (SES) Feature which allows other Linksys products to connect easily.
It's more of a pain if you ask me.

Glad you solved your problem, although you could have done it without cloning it wink2.gif
