I'm surprised nobody posted about this. It's quite a big deal.

Adobe officially released the File Format specifications of the SWF Format.

You can download it here.

Google and Yahoo search are supposedly using this information to enable searching for and within Flash files.

Wow, that is a major change in strategy. But still flash is only good for specific websites or parts of websites. Don't really remember the last time I saw a professional site all in flash, except an artist’s website. So I'm not really sure just how effective it is that google can search for it.

Google still sucks at video search (still in beta). Live.com has really done some good stuff with that, and they are better than Yahoo video search. So at least in one field live is getting it right, it's also catching up in the image search field, but still not quite there.

Regardless, it will be interesting to see how this adobe release affects the web.

I saw that on google news a day or so ago, but didn't really care. It is nice for flash stes, but I have yet to launch a single one of those, so nothing useful there for me. I haven't even looked for a flash website, so that tells you something.

But I guess that enough of the world wants it to happen so I suppose it is a good thing.

I'm actually feeling inclined to cheer Microsoft for making this possible. Without the potential threat of Silverlight, Adobe likely would have never done this. Here's to hoping that Flash starts becoming more stable in the next few months as well. icon_up.gif

Well I think it is useful for professional sites as well as those other creative ones, that use a nice flash intro on their landing page, backed by the rest of the content of the site in the rest of the pages, I have often, seen sites whose landing pages are nothing more than a flash intro, although I personally hate landing on a page that starts out subjecting me to archaic music or some shrill voice telling me how or what to do LOL!

TSG!
