There are probably a ton of threads like this, but my brain is fried and the search terms I used didn't return results. Kids are over, and I want to scream.

Anyway, I have a site. I am using Apache, PHP, and MySQL. I, of course, can access my site by going to http://localhost/, but isn't there a way to use my IP address like a domain name? So I don't have to use a hosting service or buy a domain name, but just use http://x.x.x.x/?

I have a feeling I have to edit httpd.conf using Allow, Deny, ServerName, ServerAlias or something.

Yes, I am a total idiot.



PS: Will this override what my IP currently points to. Like if I type in my IP address in the URL bar, it takes me to my router's (USR) status page at http://x.x.x.x/status.asp

I assume you want people outside your network to be able to see your web site?

If so, first thing you must make sure if that your ISP allows inbound port 80 traffic.

Second thing is you will have to portmap your router (and port 80) to your web server.

If you're going to 192.168.1.1 (or something similar) then yes, your router will come up, but if you're going to the IP shown at http://www.WhatIsMyIP.com then you shouldn't see your router setup.

Another thing to be aware of is your ISP probably doesn't give you a static IP, so that address is going to change often (daily even).

You can get a service like DynDNS to update a host name (like yourname.dyndns.com) and it'll always map to your current IP (kind of like a domain, but I think it's free).

Yes, that's what I wanted. xD My brain is soooo fried right now.

Okay, okay.

Both going to 192.168.2.1 and my WhatIsMyIP.com IP take me to the router setup page.

And yes, my IP changes every 24 hours on average, unless I manually renew it.

I'll check that out.
