Hi folks. Have a project that interests me a bit. I am currently a new linux user (happy user of the ubuntu distro), and I want to learn more. I've been to other websites, and it's usually easy to find out how to do a specific task (via google), but it would be nice to know the Why behind it all. Now, I know there are websites out there, and I've been going to them, but in my own opinion, I believe there is no better way to learn than to build a tutorial/document for others. Leaving this document as open source and modifiable, would allow changes to be made.

Would anyone be interested in working on a website/documentation to help others learn to use linux?

I was thinking to break it up into various sections.
1.) History of Linux...the basic story of its origin
2.) Ideas behind Linux and the idea of its methodology
3.) File structure of Linux, and the Why of its design
4.) Basic commands of Linux
5.) Scripting in Linux (based off of the information from the previous section)
6.) What built in features? (i.e. gcc)
7.) Differences between Linux and Windows (why pick one over the other).
8.) Interesting hacks for your OS (neat side projects)
9.) Security Tips

and so on and so forth. This project is not meant to be the authority on linux, instead, I am thinking its main purpose is to teach the people who actively work on building this project. Self learning ftw wink2.gif. Let me know.

It might be something worth looking into. How do you plan on implementing the project? Wiki - or building a custom application?

Wiki isn't all that bad of an idea, but I would be more up for developing a site. That would allow for our own sorting methods, and possible expansion into other projects later (i.e. having a practice command prompt to practice scripts...just an idea, but a nice learning tool), that and I like designed sites.

Was thinking of having the site broken into the sections mentioned above (with modifications to that list as needed), and at first, have forums enabled so people could put in their two cents with the specifics. Also, by researching each section separately, and implementing our own knowledge from the forums, as well as from documented sources, we should provide fairly reliable information.

Any ideas on what you would like to see in it? And would probably prefer to build our own custom cms.

I like the custom app idea as well. It's a good learning tool, portfolio builder and you have more control.

I would be interested as well, however I am not an advanced Linux user. The research and writing effort would prove beneficial to us both being Linux noobs. We would need some more advanced and experienced Linux users as well.

I think it is a great idea though.

You can count me in for something to do with LInux. X windows would be a definite interest. Depending on the area I could be a expert or noob smile.gif

I'd love to help out, so let me know, I like the idea of both custom app and a wiki.

Hi All,

Just wondering how this project is moving along? Ive just made the switch to Linux. Instaled Fedora 9 - mainly because I read that its a nice easy noob Linux distro to start with. Just thought Id also throw in my two cents worth and say that I also think this is a brilliant idea. smile.gif

Hey guys there is a sourceforge project setup called OmniLinux

We are trying to work on a chat session or something to make sure we are all on the same page.

As a personal update I will be in NYC this weekend with limited internet access. So I would like for the chat to be sometime after next Tuesday

We're probably all in pretty close timezones, but I think we should coordinate it just in case.

I'm GMT -5 I believe, ya'll?

We could get an IRC channel, I'll setup a bot to reserve #omnilinux on efnet or something if that's good with you guys.
