I was talking to someone about a good way to advertise my website, and he recommended making intelligent posts in forums based around the same topic as my site was, and then just having a small/tasteful image or link in my signature to get me links with.

I'm not saying that works for everyone, but I think you should keep it in mind - it will probably be much cheaper than buying user's signatures.

That's a great idea - I successfully done that before. It is actually much cheaper to buy someone's signature link.
